On February 15, a message was relayed to each class period: earbuds and headphones are no longer allowed to be worn in the classroom unless otherwise directed. Students who violate the policy will receive detention or be turned over to the office for repeated offense.

Earbuds are an example of banned devices.

First, this change results from a variety of reasons. Reports were made about students recording and contacting others using a bluetooth feature to cheat. Teachers noticed inattentiveness during lessons and group discussions from students wearing them. Many refused to remove them when requested.

Leaving earbuds and airpods in can also lead to safety issues. Students may be unaware of their surroundings or when a fire drill alarm rings. Dangling cords interfere with labs, and instructions are blocked out.

In contrast is the argument that listening to music while working has benefits. “It helps me focus and kind of makes studying fun. It also puts me in the mood to get things done and motivates me,” junior Siren Randazzo said. While music aids concentration and memorization for some, it is not helpful for everyone.

Overall, it is hoped that this policy will boost communication, productivity and ultimately learning. According to Spanish teacher Karina Mueller, “It takes a lot of stress off of me because now I don’t have to tell people a million times to take off their earbuds. I can just teach because they’re not anywhere.”
