Social Media Icons Speak About Body Positivity

Samantha Martin, Business/Social Media Manager

Body positivity is in and body shaming is out; Kourtney Kardashian and Demi Lovato have all spoken out about loving the body you’re in. After Kardashian posted an unorthodox picture of her in a bathing suit, highlighting her stretch marks on Instagram, support and positivity was everywhere in her comment section. Lovato recently came out with a short segment giving voice on her past eating disorder after online trolls commented on her “fuller figure.”

It’s no secret that body positivity and self love has become more popular in this day and age. Three in five women statistically are insecure about their stretch marks. To elaborate, with Kardashian having 85 million followers, 51 million of these women are likely self-conscious.

Junior Saydra Pappenfus, who considers herself to be a body positive girl, said that stretch marks are beautiful and make women elaborate and unique.I interpret body positivity as self acceptance and an understanding that others may or may not accept themselves and respecting that,” Pappenfus continued.

In this day and age, social media could affect men and women with negative feelings about their own body. It helps to see that even people with the most followers aren’t perfect.
