The hushed waves of the water resonate in the background as the photographer sets up her camera. With a wave of her cap, Senior Alexis Avalos McKendrick turns to face the camera.

With a glove in one hand and a softball in the other, she raises her eyes from the plate and takes a step forward. She draws in a deep breath—determination residing deep within her eyes—

and releases the ball. The crack of the bat rings in her ears, and as the blurry image of the ball comes towards her, she lifts her glove and catches it.

Images of an oversized glove and cleats immersed in dirt arise as senior Alexis Avalos McKendrick describes her childhood. With her mother motivating her in the stands, Avalos McKendrick found her passion for softball at a young age.

Late into elementary school, her family moved from the Inland Empire in Southern California to Lake Havasu City. It’s in Lake Havasu where she has excelled on the city softball team, furthering her passion.

Draped in purple from head to toe with the greenery behind them, Avalos McKendrick kneels down to kiss her little sister, Angelina Mendez.

Additionally, her mother has been her biggest influence throughout her life. Whether it be through the endless support at her softball games or relentless praise for her accomplishments, her mother is always there for her. “Although my parents weren’t together, my mom always did everything she could for me.”

Furthermore, when she envisions her future, a desk holding various palettes and brushes come to mind. A curling iron heating, nail polish drying and eyeshadow being swept across an eyelid intrigue Avalos McKendrick, which is why she is planning to attend a cosmetology school in California.

Conversely, she has some words she would like to dedicate to her family. “I would like to thank everyone in my family that have helped me become the young woman I am today, especially my mom, stepdad, two brothers and my little sister.”
